about

One evening, while playing with Duke Pearson’s big band at the Half Note jazz club, John Carisi approached me to ask if I would be interested in doing an album under my own name for which he would compose and/or arrange the music. “Machinations” is the result of that conversation and the many brain-storming sessions to follow. John was a very exacting writer and the personnel of the band was of great import to the interpretation of his music. We went over preliminary sketches and arrangements a number of times, discussing the music and the musicians we wanted for this project: my first solo album. The planning came together with executive producer Jerry Schoenbaum’s approval, and the dates were set. From the first note, the orchestra was on top of it! These were among the best musicians on the New York jazz and recording scene. Though I was the featured soloist, pianist Dick Hyman, guitarist Joe Beck, trombonist Urbie Green, and saxophonists Mortie Lewis, Dick Spencer, and George Young make their contributions. John Carisi, a close friend and sometimes collaborator with Gil Evans was a marvelous composer and arranger who made many contributions to our music over a long career. He was one of a kind. I was so fortunate—and honored—that he wanted to go on this journey with me.
